Japanese Traditional Craft

Wajima Lacquerware Chopsticks - Flying Dragonfly (Tombo) with gold inlay

Beautiful set of Chopsticks (2 pairs) with a delicately carved design of dragonflies in a paulownia wooden box, perfect for a wedding gift or wedding anniversary.

In Japan, dragonflies are known for catching pests, and because they can only fly forward and never backwards, they are considered insects that never retreat. They are called "victorious insects" as they represent the samurai spirit of "never retreat," and were appreciated by warriors as a good omen.

Chinkin (gold inlay) is a decorative technique often used in Japanese lacquerware. The artisan will carve a pattern on a lacquered surface using a chisel, and rub in the urushi lacquer into the concave area, then fills (or sinks) gold or silver foil, powder, or colored powder to create a pattern. The lacquer rubbed into the carved pattern acts as an adhesive to hold the gold or silver foil or colored powder in place.

Please add a furoshiki if you are thinking of purchasing as a gift.
